Sphere of professional interests:
Post-Soviet Eurasia, society and state, comparative politics. Identity politics, social transformation, social movements, anti-Americanism and authoritarianism with a focus on the former USSR, especially Central Asia. His publications include Slow Anti-Americanism (Stanford UP, 2021), The Paradox of Power (with John Heathershaw, U. Pittsburgh Press, 2017), Political Ethnography (ed. U. Chicago Press, 2009), Contemporary clan politics" (U. Washington Press, 2004). Current projects include collaboration (with Rachel Silvey) on understanding the consequences of China's Belt and Road Initiative, as well as a book on the rise of shamelessness in global politics.
