Component: Component by selection
Cycle: Base disciplines
Goal
- Formation of students' knowledge of the functional foundations of design and design features of modern load-bearing and enclosing metal structures of buildings and structures.
Objective
- Teaching a logical sequence of students the skills of an integrated approach in solving the problems of structural design, making schemes used in strength calculations of metal structures of real machines, familiarization with the methods of automated calculations and design of metal structures using a variety of application programs.
Learning outcome: knowledge and understanding
- Knowledge of methods of calculation of metal structures on limiting states; methods of choice of material for elements of structures and their connections; principles of design of building metal structures.
Learning outcome: applying knowledge and understanding
- Ability to choose, justifying his choice, the material for the structures of buildings and structures, types of sections of elements; determine the loads on structures and build their design diagrams; design beams, columns, trusses; make drawings of metal structures stage KM and KMD.
Learning outcome: formation of judgments
- Mastering the methods of engineering surveys, technology of designing parts and structures according to the technical specifications with the use of standard applied calculation and graphic software packages.
Learning outcome: communicative abilities
- Ability to make a preliminary feasibility study of design calculations, develop design and working technical documentation, execute completed design work, control compliance of the developed projects and technical documentation with the building, standards, technical conditions and other regulatory documents.
Learning outcome: learning skills or learning abilities
- Possession of the methodology of design of metal structures with the help of current normative documents and applied computer programs.
Teaching methods
Traditional technologies are provided for teaching: classroom instruction and independent work of students. The lecture course is presented in multimedia form. Motivational speech is used when presenting lecture material at the beginning and at the end of the lecture. Text, audio and video information, graphs, tables, etc. are used in the lecture-presentation and practical classes.
Assessment of the student's knowledge
Teacher oversees various tasks related to ongoing assessment and determines students' current performance twice during each academic period. Ratings 1 and 2 are formulated based on the outcomes of this ongoing assessment. The student's learning achievements are assessed using a 100-point scale, and the final grades P1 and P2 are calculated as the average of their ongoing performance evaluations. The teacher evaluates the student's work throughout the academic period in alignment with the assignment submission schedule for the discipline. The assessment system may incorporate a mix of written and oral, group and individual formats.
Period | Type of task | Total |
---|---|---|
1 rating | Perform design of beams | 0-100 |

Evaluation form
The student's final grade in the course is calculated on a 100 point grading scale, it includes:
- 40% of the examination result;
- 60% of current control result.
The final grade is calculated by the formula:
FG = 0,6 | MT1+MT2 | +0,4E |
2 |
Where Midterm 1, Midterm 2are digital equivalents of the grades of Midterm 1 and 2;
E is a digital equivalent of the exam grade.
Final alphabetical grade and its equivalent in points:
The letter grading system for students' academic achievements, corresponding to the numerical equivalent on a four-point scale:
Alphabetical grade | Numerical value | Points (%) | Traditional grade |
---|---|---|---|
A | 4.0 | 95-100 | Excellent |
A- | 3.67 | 90-94 | |
B+ | 3.33 | 85-89 | Good |
B | 3.0 | 80-84 | |
