Implementation of the Green Metric questionnaire indicators in the University's strategy

After receiving the first results in 2020, the criteria of the Green Metric questionnaire and the UN Sustainable Development Goals were implemented in the most important document of the university – the Strategic Development Plan.

The structure of the University's strategy

The University's strategy consists of 5 strategic initiatives. Each of them has subsections. The UN Sustainable Development Goals are reflected in each of the five initiatives of the Strategy, and the quantitative indicators of the GreenMetric questionnaire have become one of the mechanisms for monitoring the implementation of the Strategy's initiatives in the field of sustainable development and environmental protection, including in the field of energy and climate change.

Effective university programs to combat climate change

2018-2019: The Green Campus project was launched in 2018. The goal of the project at that time was to start actively promoting "green" ideas in the life of the university. Many energies and resource conservation and waste recycling programs have been developed. It was necessary to educate the campus population in environmental behavior. Special courses have been introduced into the curriculum, for example, "Ecology and sustainable development", "Climate change and green Economy" and others.

2020-2021: In 2020, after successfully joining the GreenMetric ranking, the university held several interuniversity conferences and advanced training courses for teachers at schools in the East Kazakhstan region in the field of ecology.

2021-2022: In 2021, the university actively promotes scientific projects in the field of carbon neutrality for the city and the region, cooperating with foreign partners.

In September 2022, EKTU took part in the GreenMetric conference in the section "Energy and Climate Change".

In 2023, the Green University Seminar was held for the first time, the purpose of which is to attract as many universities as possible to participate in the Green Metric survey and the implementation of Green Strategy.

In 2024, we held the seminar for the second time, and we will strive to make it an annual event.

Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction program

A Carbon Center has been established at EKTU. His work focuses on educational and research activities in the field of carbon neutrality. Based on the Center, projects are being developed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration, both for the university and for the city and region.

EKTU implements programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles and internal processes; by reducing the consumption of purchased electricity and heat, as well as by saving water and reducing the amount of waste and wastewater removed from the campus (Areas 1, 2 and 3).

The University's greenhouse gas emission reduction program includes the following items:

  • Regulation of thermal energy consumption by automated thermal units. This gives the result: indirect reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by reducing thermal energy consumption; reduction in the use of air conditioners.
  • Paid parking for a private vehicle to reduce the number of vehicles on campus.
  • Collection from the territory and processing of organic waste, processing of other waste.
  • Implementation of energy-saving devices.
  • Implementation of water-saving programs to reduce the volume of wastewater.
  • The introduction of green building elements to provide natural ventilation and lighting and thus reduce electricity consumption.
  • The use of renewable energy sources for electricity generation, which reduces the purchased electricity.
