Project summary:

The scientific and technological revolution that after the Second World War rapidly burst into the life of all developed countries of the world is connected first of all with the wide application of rare metals. Their use gave birth to whole new areas of modern industry, science and technology. All supermagnetic, superlight, superhard, superheat-resistant and high-strength construction materials are created today on the basis of or using rare elements. All resource- and energy-saving technologies are not feasible without rare elements. Even in agriculture, the use of very small doses of the rare metal neodymium increases the yield of food crops by 60 percent. There are now many thousands of areas of effective use of rare metals in both military and civilian industries.

The Kalba-Narym metallogenic zone is known as a large rare metal province that has been studied in detail for centuries. Despite a fairly thorough study of the known objects in Central Kalba, the northwest and southeast of this structure remain poorly studied.

Over the past decades, there have been virtually no serious or major discoveries of new deposits. The mining industry is developing those deposits and those reserves that were put on the balance sheet back in Soviet times. As a result, there is a reduction and practical exhaustion of exploration reserves for most strategically important types of minerals, a reduction in the state fund of profitable subsoil areas for their provision for use by mining companies.

The project is aimed at assessing the prospects of southeastern Kalba based on a number of features favorable for the development of rare metal mineralization by analogy with already known large rare metal objects (Yubileinoye, Kvartsevoye, Belogorskoye, etc.): widespread development of granitoids, highly supersaturated with alumina, which indicates a substantially aluminous composition of the crust, most typical for rare metal and tin-bearing regions; location on the flank of a median trough of the miogeosynclinal type, adjacent to large deep faults; the presence of porphyry hypabyssal intrusions, which are associated with zones of metasomatically altered rocks and manifestations of sulfide, gold ore and tin-tungsten mineralization; ubiquitous manifestation of disseminated tin-tungsten mineralization in the form of various geological formations (intrusions, dikes, disturbance zones, areas of metasomatic alteration of rocks, etc.), etc.

Goal:

Study of the patterns of formation and spatial distribution of rare metal deposits (ore occurrences), and assessment of the prospects of south-eastern Kalba with the aim of increasing the resource potential of strategically important minerals (Sn, W, Ta, Nb, Li, Be, etc.).

Expected and achieved results of the project:

The expected results will consist of assessing the southeastern Kalba for a number of lithological-stratigraphic, magmatic, tectonic and other exploration features, identifying promising objects for further geological exploration by subsoil users and assessing their investment attractiveness. Increasing the mineral resource base of critical rare metals in the southeastern Kalba is of strategic importance for the region and the entire country.

Year The obtained research results.
Publications (with links to them) and patents; information for potential users.
2024 The fund information and published literature on geology, magmatism, structural and textural characteristics of the areas of deposits and ore occurrences of rare metals within the study region were studied. A map of the actual material of the study area was compiled with the allocation of promising rare metal objects for further field work. Sampling was carried out within the ore-bearing and barren massifs in the Kurchumsky district. A correlation scheme of the ages and petrochemical characteristics of ore-bearing and conditionally barren granitoid massifs within the study area was compiled.
2025 Continuation of field expedition work in the south-eastern part of Kalba. Study of the patterns of formation and spatial distribution of the studied deposits and comparison with known deposits of Central Kalba. Participation in international scientific conferences and internships of project participants
2026 Development of a model for the formation of deposits. Development of search criteria. Conducting field expeditionary work. Identification of promising areas. Development of scientific and practical recommendations. Identification of the main criteria for the investment attractiveness of identified promising areas for prospective investors and subsoil users.
