Project abstract

The program is aimed at developing hard cobalt-free alloys based on tungsten carbide (WC-(FeNi), WC-Fe/Ni) with high hardness, crack resistance, bending strength and wear resistance. The idea of the program is to create cobalt-free metal turning tools using powder metallurgy methods with physical properties comparable to existing commercial products, but at lower cost. The final shape of the resulting products eliminates the subsequent expensive and time-consuming machining.

The purpose of the project is to develop cobalt-free hard alloys based on tungsten carbide with high performance characteristics, their characterization and testing in real-world operation, as well as technologies for the production of precision parts based on it for the domestic industry.

Expected and achieved results of the project:

  • A method for processing the initial powders using high-energy processing will be developed in order to reduce sintering energy in the synthesis of cobalt-free high-strength hard alloys;
  • An algorithm for obtaining turning tools in a complete form will be developed. Due to the in-depth study of the concept of creating cutting parts from hard alloys based on tungsten carbide, the characteristics of the punches (geometric parameters, grades of materials), the conditions of the IPS process (duration, rate of temperature increase, press pressure, suitable sintering temperatures) will be determined;
  • The installation of power supply systems, cooling, ensuring the mechanical pressure of the punches and the vacuum/inert medium in the working chamber will be carried out. An important result in this task is also the development of a control program-an algorithm for providing heating and pressure for high-quality synthesis of materials. At the end of the stage, commissioning will be carried out, including verification, configuration and testing of the installation in order to ensure the declared parameters and modes;
  • Using the IPS method and powder metallurgy, work will be carried out on the creation of cobalt-free metal turning tools based on WC-(FeNi) and WC-Fe/Ni hard alloys.

Based on the results obtained, the results of this project will be published:

  • at least 6 (six) articles and (or) reviews in peer-reviewed scientific publications in the scientific field of the program, included in the 1st (first), 2nd (second) and (or) 3rd (third) quartile of the impact factor in the Web of Science database and (or) having a percentile of CiteScore in the Scopus database is at least 50 (fifty).
  • at least 7 (seven) articles in journals recommended by the COKNVO.
  • at least 1 (one) monograph or textbook in foreign and (or) Kazakhstani publishing houses recommended by the academic council and (or) the scientific and technical council of the applicant's organization.
  • at least 1 (one) patent in foreign patent offices (European, American, Japanese) or at least 1 (one) foreign or international patent included in the database Derwent Innovations Index (Web of Science, Clarivate Analytics) or at least 3 (three) intellectual property objects (patent; for applications in the field of information technology - copyright certificate), registered at the National Institute of Intellectual Property of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
