The concept of CDIO is outlined in 12 standards:

Standard 1 – CDIO as a general development context

The adoption of the principle according to which the creation and development of products and systems throughout their entire life cycle – the Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate is the general context of the development of engineering education.

Standard 2 – Results of the CDIO program

A clear, detailed description of the acquired personal, interpersonal and professional engineering competencies in creating products and systems that meet the established goals of the program and are approved by all participants of the program.

Standard 3 – Integrated Curriculum

A curriculum that includes complementary academic disciplines and allows the integration of personal, interpersonal competencies, as well as competencies to create products and systems in teaching.

Standard 4 – Introduction to Engineering

An introductory course that lays the foundations of engineering practice in the field of creating products and systems and teaches basic personal and interpersonal competencies.

Standard 5 – Tasks for designing and creating products

The curriculum includes at least two training and practical tasks for the design and creation of products, one of which is performed at the initial level, and the second – at the advanced level.

Standard 6 – CDIO classrooms

Classrooms and laboratories where it is possible to organize a practical approach to teaching the skills of designing and creating products and systems, the transfer of disciplinary knowledge, as well as the organization of social learning.

Standard 7 – Integrated learning activities

Integrated learning activities that develop disciplinary knowledge, as well as personal, interpersonal competencies and the ability to design and create new products and systems.

Standard 8 – Active Learning

Learning based on an active practical approach.

Standard 9 – Improving the competence of the teaching staff in CDIO skills

Activities aimed at improving the competence of the teaching staff in the field of personal, interpersonal competencies, as well as the ability to create products and systems.

Standard 10 – Improving the instructional abilities of members of the faculty

Activities aimed at improving the competence of instructors in conducting integrated practical classes, in the application of methods of active learning during classes and in assessing students' academic performance.

Standard 11 – Assessment of CDIO skills acquisition

Assessment of students' progress in mastering personal, interpersonal competencies, the ability to create products and systems, as well as disciplinary knowledge.

Standard 12 – Evaluation of the CDIO program

A system by which the entire program is evaluated according to the listed twelve standards for students, instructors and other key participants in order to continuously improve the educational process.
