June 5 is a special day for everyone who protects nature, works for a cleaner future, and inspires others to care for the environment. In Kazakhstan, this day is officially recognized as the professional holiday of ecologists, conservationists, and environmental specialists. It was established in 2011 by the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan."

This day coincides with World Environment Day, which has been celebrated around the globe for more than 50 years. It was proclaimed in 1972 at the 27th session of the UN General Assembly as a call to action for all nations.

Today, more than ever, it is important to unite efforts for the sake of nature conservation. Youth play a key role in this mission — the future of the planet lies in their hands. D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University is actively advancing the Green Campus project and supporting student environmental clubs, where young people learn to care for the natural world, develop "green" initiatives, and become true leaders of environmental change.

Special attention should be given to responsible consumption and waste separation, especially of plastic, which has become one of the planet's major pollutants. Everyone can begin with simple steps: refuse single-use packaging, use reusable bags, and sort waste both at home and at work. Separate waste collection is not just a trend — it's an effective way to reduce pressure on nature, conserve resources, and give materials a second life. The sooner eco-friendly behavior becomes the norm, the cleaner and safer our world will be — for us and for future generations.

For the second year, EKTU has been partnering with the national eco-initiative "3.2.1.Start!", which supports youth-led environmental projects and helps build a community of active young people striving to improve the world around them. This year, the university’s eco-clubs actively promoted plastic waste separation within the university, schools, and local organizations. They installed eco-boxes, supervised collection during events, participated in clean-up days, and conducted awareness training sessions.

Environmental education is the key to sustainable development. The more people understand the impact of their everyday choices; the sooner we will achieve harmony with nature. Scientists, educators, students, and volunteers — everyone can make a difference.

Congratulations to all ecologists, researchers, students, activists, and all those who protect nature! May your work continue to inspire, matter, and make a visible impact. May your example lead to positive change and awaken in others a love for our common home — planet Earth.
