Component: Component by selection
Cycle: Base disciplines
Goal
- To form the basis of a modern specialist's world view necessary for the rational design, construction and reconstruction of foundations and foundations of various buildings and structures.
Objective
- To develop engineering analysis skills in the design process. Develop the ability to independently choose the type of foundation for a building or structure and to defend their decision.
Learning outcome: knowledge and understanding
- The ability to correctly assess the engineering and geological conditions of the construction site, the structural properties of soils; to assess the stability of soils at the base of structures and slopes, the pressure of soils on the building envelope.
Learning outcome: applying knowledge and understanding
- Has a good command of modern design methods and calculates shallow and deep foundations, foundations and foundations in difficult engineering-geological and seismic conditions, on artificially improved foundations.
Learning outcome: formation of judgments
- Mastery of methods for assessing the stability of soil masses and soil pressure on enclosing structures, the basic principles of design and calculation of foundations and foundations.
Learning outcome: communicative abilities
- Able to find organisational, managerial and engineering solutions in production situations related to foundation construction.
Learning outcome: learning skills or learning abilities
- The ability to work independently with scientific, technical, normative and reference literature.
Teaching methods
The lectures are accompanied by multimedia demonstration of drawings, photographs, diagrams, drawings, some of which are made in a dynamic formulation. In order to increase the level of assimilation of lecture material and acquisition of practical design skills, an active form of practical classes in the form of individual assignments with their subsequent defence is provided. Independent work of students includes the work with the lecture notes and textbooks, implementation of the course project.
Assessment of the student's knowledge
Teacher oversees various tasks related to ongoing assessment and determines students' current performance twice during each academic period. Ratings 1 and 2 are formulated based on the outcomes of this ongoing assessment. The student's learning achievements are assessed using a 100-point scale, and the final grades P1 and P2 are calculated as the average of their ongoing performance evaluations. The teacher evaluates the student's work throughout the academic period in alignment with the assignment submission schedule for the discipline. The assessment system may incorporate a mix of written and oral, group and individual formats.
| Period | Type of task | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 rating | Soil formation and composition. Physical properties of soils. | 0-100 |
| The design resistance of the foundation soil. | ||
| Calculation and design of the strip foundation. | ||
| Calculation of the probable settlement of the strip foundation. | ||
| Control work. | ||
| 2 rating | Calculation of the pile foundation. | 0-100 |
| Technical and economic indicators. Comparison of foundations. | ||
| Control work. | ||
| Total control | Exam, Course Project | 0-100 |

Evaluation form
The student's final grade in the course is calculated on a 100 point grading scale, it includes:
- 40% of the examination result;
- 60% of current control result.
The final grade is calculated by the formula:
| FG = 0,6 | MT1+MT2 | +0,4E |
| 2 |
Where Midterm 1, Midterm 2are digital equivalents of the grades of Midterm 1 and 2;
E is a digital equivalent of the exam grade.
Final alphabetical grade and its equivalent in points:
The letter grading system for students' academic achievements, corresponding to the numerical equivalent on a four-point scale:
| Alphabetical grade | Numerical value | Points (%) | Traditional grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | 95-100 | Excellent |
| A- | 3.67 | 90-94 | |
| B+ | 3.33 | 85-89 | Good |
| B | 3.0 | 80-84 | |
| B- | 2.67 | 75-79 | |
| C+ | 2.33 | 70-74 | |
| C | 2.0 | 65-69 | Satisfactory |
| C- | 1.67 | 60-64 | |
| D+ | 1.33 | 55-59 | |
| D | 1.0 | 50-54 | |
