Description: The course focuses on the formation of linguistic, discursive and socio-cultural competence of postgraduates, access to the culture of a target language, acquisition of professional speech skills, development of translation skills in a professional sphere. The course includes grammar review, preparation for writing assignments, reading, listening and speaking techniques.

Goal
  • The goal of teaching "Foreign language (professional)" is to improve the communicative and intercultural competence to the level of international standards in various fields of professional and scientific activities.
Objective
  • formation and development of communicative competence (linguistic, sociolinguistic, sociocultural, strategic, discursive and pragmatic) necessary for professional activities;
  • formation of a sufficient level of proficiency in a professional foreign language for the implementation of written and oral communication required in scientific activities.
Learning outcome: knowledge and understanding
  • As a result of studying the discipline, students should know: - structure and basics of written and oral texts on official topics; -functional characteristics of oral and written official texts, including scientific and technical nature; - documentation requirements adopted in professional communication and in European countries and in the language taught (within the program); -generally accepted requirements (Kazakhstani and foreign) for the design of scientific papers and other work related to research activities; -world standards of research activities; - rules of speech in accordance with the conditions of professional communication, depending on the style and type of communication in the social and academic spheres.
Learning outcome: applying knowledge and understanding
  • students should be able to: - analyze and synthesize information on a given topic, transform it into an oral or written statement in the context of the research topic; - establish a causal relationship, build reasoning, draw conclusions (by induction, deduction and analogy) and draw a reasoned conclusion; - sum up the results of the study, find confirmation in various sources, choose material to defend their research; - comment on the information received, taking into account the genre features of the text and the problem posed, formulate the author's point of view and give a reasoned opinion.
Learning outcome: formation of judgments
  • students should have the following representations: - conducting a constructive dialogue to achieve the maximum possible effectiveness of the goal; - preparation of project assignments in a foreign language; - work with sites in a foreign language; - performing various logical operations.

  • When studying the discipline, both general and special communication skills are formed: - logical and structural integrity; - possession of the technical content of speech; - linguistic correctness of speech; - implementation of the communication plan; - knowledge of a professional language; - reading and understanding of authentic literature for special purposes; - conducting debates, discussions on certain topics.

  • In addition to language training, the course has educational and educational goals: - processing a large amount of foreign language information in order to collect material for writing a master's thesis or part of it in the target language; - expanding horizons; - development of tolerance.

Assessment of the student's knowledge

Teacher oversees various tasks related to ongoing assessment and determines students' current performance twice during each academic period. Ratings 1 and 2 are formulated based on the outcomes of this ongoing assessment. The student's learning achievements are assessed using a 100-point scale, and the final grades P1 and P2 are calculated as the average of their ongoing performance evaluations. The teacher evaluates the student's work throughout the academic period in alignment with the assignment submission schedule for the discipline. The assessment system may incorporate a mix of written and oral, group and individual formats.

Evaluation form

The student's final grade in the course is calculated on a 100 point grading scale, it includes:

  • 40% of the examination result;
  • 60% of current control result.

The final grade is calculated by the formula:
