D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University is advancing the Hybrid Nature-Based Solutions for Sustainable Flood Management and Climate Resilience in Ust-Kamenogorsk initiative to strengthen the resilience of urban infrastructure against extreme rainfall and other climate-related hazards through the implementation of hybrid Nature-based Solutions.

The project promotes the integration of natural and engineered infrastructure to improve urban stormwater management, reduce local flood risks, and protect public spaces, transport infrastructure, and municipal assets. Planned measures include the establishment of bioswales, rain gardens, biofiltration systems, vegetated drainage corridors, nature-based riverbank stabilization, and restoration of riparian vegetation.

Particular emphasis is placed on the application of digital environmental monitoring technologies, hydrological modelling, climate risk assessment, and innovative approaches to managing urban green-blue infrastructure. The initiative also includes the creation of demonstration sites, educational activities, and active engagement of students, professionals, and local communities in practical climate adaptation measures.

The project contributes to safer and more resilient urban infrastructure, improved environmental quality of public spaces, advancement of scientific research and environmental education, and supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to sustainable cities, climate action, water resource management, and ecosystem restoration.
