D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University is implementing the Urban Wetland Recovery for Climate-Resilient Public Spaces and Municipal Infrastructure in Ust-Kamenogorsk initiative to restore urban wetlands as an integral component of sustainable and climate-resilient urban infrastructure.
The project promotes the rehabilitation of degraded urban wetland ecosystems through the application of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) that strengthen the city's resilience to climate change. Key objectives include reducing flood risks, improving stormwater management, enhancing urban environmental quality, conserving biodiversity, and creating healthier and more sustainable public spaces.
Working together with local and international partners, the University develops innovative approaches for ecological restoration, digital environmental monitoring, and smart management of urban green-blue infrastructure. The initiative also establishes demonstration sites, supports environmental education, and actively engages students, schools, and local communities in practical sustainability activities.
The project contributes to the advancement of research, environmental education, and sustainable urban development while supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to sustainable cities, climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration, and responsible management of natural resources.
