EcoCompost is a sustainability initiative at D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University focused on processing organic waste generated across the university campus through composting and vermiculture. Grass clippings, fallen leaves, sawdust, and biodegradable food waste are transformed into high-quality compost instead of being disposed of in landfills.
The resulting compost is applied in campus landscaping and greening activities, helping restore soil fertility, improve the health of green spaces, and reduce the need for commercially produced soil amendments and fertilizers. By returning organic matter to the natural cycle, the project demonstrates the practical implementation of circular economy principles and nature-based waste management solutions.
The initiative also serves as a hands-on learning platform where students gain practical experience in biological waste treatment, sustainable resource management, and environmental engineering. EcoCompost illustrates how campus-generated organic waste can be transformed into a valuable resource, supporting biodiversity, sustainable landscaping, and the university's commitment to environmental responsibility.
