Basic provisions
- The University has several programs: separate collection of paper and plastic; collection of batteries; disposal of waste that is prohibited by the Environmental Codex from being exported to the landfill of SHW (electronic waste, construction waste, mercury lamps).
- For waste management contracts have been signed with companies that provide services for processing and neutralization of various types of waste.
- Some of the organic waste is recycled on campus.
- Projects have been implemented to recycle electronic waste, paper and plastic on campus.
1) Program to reduce the use of paper
Policy program double-sided printing, print when necessary, and policies for dematerialization of administrative procedures:
- Educational portal
- Video conferencing system - BBB
- Corporate mail
- File sharing
- Storage
- Distance Courses system
- System «Metodist»
- System of electronic applications «Service Desk»
- Electronic document management «Directum»
EKTU has long and effectively implemented an electronic document management system, which significantly reduces the use of paper in the educational and management process. For this purpose there is an educational portal, educational system Dales: Methodist; application system Service Deck; internal electronic document management system Directum, to store files, an internal file sharing, part of the exams are held in the form of computer testing.
For internal documents double-sided printing mode. It can reduce a lot of paper use that mean University can reduce CO2 emissions.
Using 2-side of paper, recheck your data before print use online system instead of hard copy.
2) Waste paper recycling Mini-line
EKTU has developed a paper recycling mini-line for small volumes of waste directly at the place of their formation. The recommendations and schemes made can be applied in other universities, enterprises, and around the world.
EKTU takes care of saving this valuable resource. Separate waste collection has been introduced at the university for a long time. But the previously collected waste paper was transferred by the University for processing to a third party. After the installation of the mini-line, processing will be carried out immediately on the territory of the university. This will also reduce the carbon footprint of the organization, since now the transportation of waste is not required.
3) Plastic recycling Mini-line
This project is a student startup.
EKTU has developed a plastic recycling mini-line for small volumes of waste directly at the place of their formation. The recommendations and schemes made can be applied in other universities, enterprises, and around the world.
The production of such devices will cost much cheaper than purchased industrial giants, whose operational losses, given the insufficient amount of raw materials for continuous operation, will also be higher.
4) Program to reduce the use of plastic
Only reusable tableware is used in the canteens, and there is free access to drinking water.
5) Recycling of organic waste
- Sawdust from the carpentry workshop is used when preparing plantings for winter, composting and construction.
- Sawdust, mown grass, harvested leaves are composted to produce compost, which is then used for planting.
- Organic waste from canteen, which manage in complete autonomy this kind of waste, are fully utilized on pet food.
- EKTU is implementing a research project on the use of vermiculation for processing organic waste and improving the soil.
This project is a student startup.
Waste such as paper waste according to the amendments to the Environmental Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan from January 1, 2019 will no longer be accepted at landfills for disposal. Also, this problem has another ecological aspect, which is the depletion of soil fertility due to the annual removal of humus. To solve the problem of processing organic waste of the use of composting in combination with the use of vermiculture is proposed. The compost obtained during the processing of organic waste will be in demand annually during the landscaping of the main campus. The project has advantages: reduction of waste volumes; implementation of the principles of green economy and sustainable development in the activities of the university; improvement of the environment, in particular green spaces on campus; creating a more comfortable environment for a person at the university.
6) Construction waste and waste from metallurgical
EKTU has a workshop for recycling waste into paving slabs. For this purpose, inorganic construction waste and waste from metallurgical enterprises of the city are used.
7) A mini-line for the processing of electronic waste has been launched
The Center for Advanced Development "VERITAS" is a participant of the university public project "Comfortable City". Within the framework of the project, a technology for processing electronic waste with the release of valuable metals from them has been developed. The university plans to expand recycling for the whole city. The equipment is disassembled, the parts are sorted, and then the electronic boards are cut into components.
8) Toxic waste treatment
- Mercury lamps were collected and sent to a specialized organization for demercurization.
- The collection of used batteries and their transfer for neutralization is organized.
- Chemical reagents used in laboratories are disposed of according to the regulations.
- Safely storage the hazardous waste received from the labs (chemical reagent) until they are picked up from the authorized company.
- The laboratory has its own waste slag heat recovery plant.
