Today, the team from the Clover eco-club took part in the practical round of the 14th International Environmental Olympiad for Universities of the CIS countries. This year, a record number of teams are participating: 54 teams from 7 countries. The students presented a project focused on the reclamation of an urban solid municipal waste (MSW) landfill. They not only demonstrated a high level of training, but also showed genuine interest in addressing one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time.
The project focused on restoring areas in Ust-Kamenogorsk that have been affected by the long-term accumulation of waste. Landfill reclamation is not just a technical task — it is an investment in the future: bringing polluted land back to life, restoring soil, preventing groundwater contamination, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The students proposed a comprehensive approach that incorporates modern technologies and environmentally friendly solutions, taking into account both the natural characteristics of the region and the needs of local communities.
The students' presentation was timed to coincide with World Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22. This day serves as a reminder of the fragility of our environment and the importance of taking care of the planet. It brings together millions of people around the world, inspiring concrete actions — from planting trees to participating in environmental initiatives.
Supporting and promoting such events is especially important today, as environmental challenges require not only attention, but also active engagement. Youth initiatives like our team's project are a powerful example of how knowledge and energy can benefit both nature and society.
