On 20 October 2026, a scientific and methodological webinar entitled “The City as a Space of Socio-Demographic Transformations” was held at D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University. The event was organised within the framework of Grant-Funded Research Project AP26198933, “East Kazakhstan: Trajectories of the Socio-Demographic and Socio-Cultural Transformation of the Urban Space of Semey and Ust-Kamenogorsk,” supported by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The webinar was moderated by Alexander Alekseenko, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Leading Researcher at the International Research Centre “DIGITAL SOCIAL RESEARCH” of D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University, and Head of the Project. Researchers from Kazakhstan and Russia participated in the webinar. The event featured the findings of sociological, historical, and interdisciplinary studies of contemporary urban processes.

The webinar provided a platform for professional discussion of urbanisation, migration and population mobility, as well as changes in the socio-cultural environment and the visual appearance of contemporary cities. A comparative analysis of research materials from Kazakhstan and Russia made it possible to identify both common trends and regional specificities in the transformation of urban and suburban spaces.

The webinar contributes to the advancement of interdisciplinary research, the strengthening of scholarly cooperation, and the validation and dissemination of the project’s findings on the socio-demographic and socio-cultural dynamics of cities in East Kazakhstan. Its outcomes may be used to develop practical recommendations for the sustainable development of Semey and Ust-Kamenogorsk, the improvement of urban policy, and the preservation of the region’s socio-cultural heritage.

The event also enhances the academic reputation of D. Serikbayev EKTU, expands its expert capacity, and promotes the findings of university-based research within national and international academic communities.
