On October 2, D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University held an organizational meeting for first-year doctoral students. The meeting was attended by Member of the Management Board – Vice-Rector for Science and Innovation Zh.T. Konurbayeva, heads of doctoral educational programs, school deans, leading research fellows, and representatives of the University’s structural units responsible for supporting educational and research activities.
Opening the meeting, Zhadyra Konurbayeva welcomed the doctoral students and outlined the key priorities for the upcoming period of study and research. Particular emphasis was placed on the fact that PhD training involves not only mastering the educational program, but also consistently developing an independent research trajectory, adopting a responsible approach to scientific work, and complying with established academic requirements.
Yelena Ivashchenko, Leading Research Fellow of the Office for Research Project Support, introduced the participants to the documented procedure for the training of Doctors of Philosophy (PhD) and professional doctorate candidates at D. Serikbayev EKTU. The presentation covered the main stages of doctoral study, the procedure for compiling doctoral students’ personal files in both paper and electronic formats, documentation requirements, as well as the doctoral student assessment procedure.
Special attention was also given to the organization of the educational process. Shynar Blanova, Senior Specialist of the Student Service Center of the Department of Academic Affairs, explained the procedure for developing an individual study plan for doctoral students and the main requirements for its content. Participants were also reminded of the importance of implementing their individual plans in a timely manner and meeting established deadlines at all stages of study.
One of the key topics of the meeting was the publication activity of early-career researchers. Samat Baigereyev, Coordinator of EKTU scientific journals, presented opportunities for publishing research results in the University’s academic journals: Central Asian Transactions on Materials Structure and Properties, EKTU Journal of Engineering Sciences, EKTU Journal of Information and Communication Sciences, and EKTU Journal of Architectural and Construction Sciences. Doctoral students received information on the main thematic areas of the journals and the requirements for preparing scientific publications.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Oxana Denissova, Head of the Office for Research Project Support of the Department of Research Activities, addressed the principles of research ethics and academic integrity in the conduct of dissertation research, as well as responsibility for violations of these principles. The organizational meeting enabled doctoral students, from the very beginning of their studies, to gain a systematic understanding of the requirements related to educational and research activities, publication performance, and dissertation preparation, as well as to ask University specialists practical questions relevant to their doctoral studies.
