Master's readings for undergraduates of the Master's programme «Civil Engineering» in the RP Center for «BIM design in construction» began with a report by Alexander Borisovitch Schmidt, a Russian scientist, Associate Professor, Cand. Sc. (Technology), Department of Metal and Wood Structures, St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
The report on the topic «Design and construction of the first Orthodox church in Antarctica» contained interesting materials of constructive developments of wooden log temple taking into account the harsh climate of the southernmost continent of the Earth - severe frosts and hurricane force winds. The construction was completed in 2004, the temple is active and decorates the deserted shore, where the staff of the Russian polar station works, and the fauna is represented only by penguins.
The report concluded with an animation of the construction process.
Master students and teachers present at the master's readings listened to the report with interest and asked questions about the technology of erection of this unique building made of Altai pine.
In the reports of master's students in the process of readings told about the theses being carried out, teachers made suggestions to improve the content and scientific level of the works. Special attention was paid to the correspondence of the performed research to the speciality, application of modern methods of design and calculation, use of artificial intelligence, elements of virtual and augmented reality.
This form of Master's readings within the framework of the week of science was optimal taking into account the large number of Master's students in the education programme «Civil Engineering».
