Currently, the Institute of Ionosphere LLP is one of the leading research institutions in Kazakhstan, and conducts fundamental and applied research in the field of solar-terrestrial connections, space weather, radiation monitoring of near-Earth space and near-space physics, research of geodynamic processes in the earth's crust , ground-space monitoring of natural and man-made emergencies.
The institute is developing 2 main directions - space technologies for studying the Earth from space and solar-terrestrial physics. Within the framework of remote sensing, a number of projects are being implemented to automate the monitoring and forecasting of natural and man-made emergencies, satellite monitoring of deformations of the earth's surface and infrastructure facilities, automated monitoring of the detection of oil pollution on the surface of the Caspian Sea, the use of multi- and hyperspectral data for geological mapping and forecasting of mineral deposits minerals, the construction of automated monitoring of the state of moraine lakes, as well as a number of projects to study the dynamics of change and inventory of glaciers in the Zhetysu Alatau and the western part of the Tien Shan and their impact on river flow, monitoring of methane emissions using remote sensing data, deployment of cloud solutions for streaming big data processing .
The staff of the Institute is more than 150 employees.
In terms of equipment, the institute has more than 10 permanent differential GNSS base stations for geodynamic monitoring of tectonic activity, 3 UAVs with various payloads (lidar, thermal imager), an underwater drone, weather stations, ground penetrating radar, and a field hyperspectrometer.
